Police Obstruct Petition To Release General

A campaign to collect signatures for a petition demanding the release of Gen. Sarath Fonseka, who liberated the country from tiger terrorism, was held at Piliyandala town today. As soon as the campaign commenced officers of Piliyandala Police arrived at the site and started obstructing the campaign stating public address systems would not be allowed to be used.

Despite the organizers of the campaign presenting the permission taken to hold the campaign and use the public address system, the police continued to obstruct the campaign stating they could not allow public address system to be used. Later, the organizers had to make use of a megaphone instead of the public address system.

Former JVP Parliamentarian and DNA candidate for Colombo District Luxman Nipunarachchi, former PC Member and candidate for DNA national list Wasantha Malani, Former Test cricketer and DNA candidate for Colombo District Ajith Cooray and a large number of volunteers took part in the campaign. They had collected more than 1500 signatures for the petition between 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. today.
